潮凪窯は、読谷村の海沿いにある小さな窯です。三代にわたって、この土地の土で焼いてきました。
Shionagi-gama est un petit atelier situé au bord de la mer, à Yomitan. Trois générations y façonnent la terre de ce lieu.
Shionagi-gama is a small kiln by the sea in Yomitan. Three generations have worked with the clay of this place.
釉薬に、浜で拾った珊瑚の欠片を焼いて灰にしたものを混ぜます。読谷の海岸は琉球石灰岩——つまり、遠い昔の珊瑚でできています。その灰が入ると、白がわずかに青を帯びます。空の青でも、海の青でもない、曇った日の浅瀬のような青です。
Nous mêlons à l'émail de la cendre de corail ramassée sur la plage. Le littoral de Yomitan est fait de calcaire des Ryukyu — c'est-à-dire de corail ancien. Cette cendre donne au blanc un léger bleu : ni celui du ciel, ni celui de la mer, mais celui des hauts-fonds un jour couvert.
Into the glaze we mix ash made from coral picked up on the shore. The coast of Yomitan is Ryukyu limestone — which is to say, very old coral. That ash gives the white a faint blue: not the blue of the sky, not of the sea, but of shallow water on an overcast day.
荒れた日の浜には、砕けた珊瑚が上がりません。だから灰を拾えるのは、海が凪いだ日だけです。窯の名前は、そこから来ています。
Les jours de tempête, la plage ne rend rien. On ne peut ramasser que lorsque la mer est étale. Le nom de l'atelier vient de là — shio-nagi, « mer calme ».
On rough days the beach gives nothing back. We can only gather when the water lies flat. The kiln takes its name from that — shio-nagi, "calm sea".
下の焚き口から火を入れ、手前の房から順に温度を上げていきます。最後の房が焼き上がるまで、誰かが必ず窯のそばにいます。
Le feu part de l'alandier, puis chaque chambre monte en température, l'une après l'autre. Jusqu'à la dernière, quelqu'un veille en permanence.
The fire starts at the mouth below, and each chamber comes up to heat in turn. Until the last one is done, someone is always beside the kiln.
釉薬の数を増やせば、選べる幅は広がります。ただ、増やすほど一つひとつが浅くなる。だから三つに絞って、そのぶん深く追いかけています。
Multiplier les émaux élargirait le choix. Mais chacun perdrait en profondeur. Nous nous en tenons à trois, pour aller plus loin dans chacun.
More glazes would mean more choice. But each one would grow shallower. We keep to three, and go further into each.
珊瑚の灰を混ぜた白。光の角度で、わずかに青がのぞきます。厚く掛かったところにだけ出る色です。
Un blanc à la cendre de corail. Selon l'angle de la lumière, un bleu affleure — seulement là où l'émail est épais.
A white with coral ash. Turn it to the light and a blue surfaces — only where the glaze pooled thick.
灰に鉄を足した深い青緑。焼き上がりの色が最も読めません。同じ釉でも、房の位置で変わります。
Un vert-bleu profond, cendre et fer. La couleur la plus imprévisible : elle change selon la chambre du four.
Deep blue-green, ash with iron. The least predictable of the three — the same glaze shifts with the chamber it sat in.
釉を掛けない土そのもの。読谷の赤土は鉄が多く、焼くと沈んだ赤になります。
La terre nue, sans émail. L'argile rouge de Yomitan, riche en fer, cuit en un rouge sourd.
The clay itself, unglazed. Yomitan's red earth is heavy with iron, and fires to a muted red.
